Frequently Asked Questions

What is Nambiti Private Game Reserve and where is it located?

Nambiti Private Game Reserve is set in KwaZulu-Natal on 23,000 magnificent acres near the town of Ladysmith, conveniently close to Johannesburg/Pretoria (3.5–4 hours) and Durban (2.5 hours). It’s malaria-free and close to the historic battlefields and the Drakensberg Mountain Range.

How many nights should I stay at Nambiti?

We recommend at least 2–3 nights to fully enjoy the safari experience. Many guests prefer 4–5 nights, which allows for multiple game drives, relaxation at the lodge, and time to explore the surrounding battlefields or Drakensberg.

What is the best time of year to visit Nambiti?

Nambiti is a year-round destination. Winter (May–September) offers crisp mornings and excellent game viewing as the bush is more open, and animals gather near waterholes. Summer (October–March) brings lush green landscapes, migratory birds, and many young animals.

What should I pack for a safari at Nambiti?

Light, neutral-coloured clothing, a warm jacket for early mornings and evenings, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, insect repellent, swimwear, and binoculars. Don’t forget your camera and chargers.

Can you see the Big 5 at Nambiti?

Yes. Nambiti is the only reserve in the area with all members of the Big 5 – lion, elephant, rhino, leopard, and buffalo – plus 40 other game species and over 250 bird species.

What time are the game drives and how long do they last?

Most lodges offer two daily game drives: one early in the morning and one in the late afternoon. Each lasts about 3–4 hours, with stops for coffee or sundowners, and wildlife sightings.

Can children go on game drives and what is the minimum age?

Yes, children are welcome, but minimum ages vary by lodge. Some allow children of all ages on shorter or specially tailored drives, while others have an age limit (typically 6 years or older) for standard drives. Check with your chosen lodge for their child policy.

What are my chances of seeing all the Big 5?

Sightings are excellent. While nature can’t be guaranteed, Nambiti’s experienced rangers track wildlife daily and most guests see all or most of the Big 5 during a stay of 2–3 nights.

What types of accommodation are available?

Nambiti offers a variety of luxury lodges – from family-friendly tented lodges to exclusive retreats. Options suit couples, families, and groups. See our Explore Lodges page for options.

What activities and experiences are offered?

Game drives, birdwatching, fishing, spa treatments, cultural battlefield tours, walking safaris (at select lodges), and river picnics. Many lodges also feature pools and relaxation areas, and some have a kids play area.

Are meals and drinks included in the rates?

Yes. Lodge stays typically include three meals a day, plus teas, coffees, and snacks on game drives. Alcoholic drinks may be included at some lodges or charged separately depending on the package.

Do I need to tip the rangers and staff?

Tipping is customary but not mandatory. Suggested guidelines are 5-10% of the cost of your stay.

Is there Wi-Fi and cell phone reception at the lodges?

Most lodges offer Wi-Fi in the main areas. Cell reception can be patchy due to the remote location, which many guests find enhances the safari experience.

Can I charge my camera and electronic devices?

Yes. All lodges have electricity and provide standard South African plug points (Type M and Type N). Bring an adaptor if travelling from abroad.

Is Nambiti suitable for families with children?

Yes. The reserve is malaria-free and many lodges are family-friendly, offering children’s programmes, family suites, and tailored game drives.

What makes Nambiti different from other game reserves?

Its malaria-free status, Big 5 guarantee, easy access from Johannesburg and Durban, varied ecosystems across 23,000 acres, and proximity to battlefields and the Drakensberg set Nambiti apart.

Are there any additional costs I should budget for?

Optional extras may include premium drinks, spa treatments, conservation levies, transfers, or off-site excursions. These vary per lodge.

What happens if it rains during my stay?

Game drives usually still go out, with ponchos provided. Rain can make for unique sightings and dramatic skies. Lodge activities, fireplaces, and wellness facilities ensure your stay remains enjoyable.

Can I do a walking safari at Nambiti?

Yes, walking safaris are offered at certain lodges with specially trained guides. These provide an intimate way to explore the bush on foot and learn about smaller wildlife and tracking.

  • From Durban: 2.5 hours via the N3.
  • Closest airport: King Shaka International (Durban), with road transfers available.
