Babies of Nambiti

Within the boundary of Nambiti Big 5 Game Reserve, it’s quite common to encounter a variety of young animals. While some species give birth year-round, others have a designated calving season.

Creatures like lions, elephants, buffalo, and cheetahs don’t adhere to a specific calving season; instead, they mate year-round, giving birth at any time within the year.

During your drives while out on Nambiti, keep an eye out for adorable newborn buffalo calves and the stunning cheetah cubs – two of the first to be born in Nambiti in over a decade!

Malica, one of the cheetahs released in June 2024, has made quite an impact since her introduction. By the end of October 2024, we utilised drone technology to check on her movements because she had been acting differently, only for us to find her with two adorable cubs. Malica has excelled in protecting her little ones, frequently moving them to ensure their safety.

The cubs have begun to share in her meals, feasting on carcasses alongside her, while still nursing from their mother until they reach about four months of age. In just 20 months, these charming little furballs will embark on their journey to independence as fully-fledged cheetahs.

Various species, including wildebeest, impala, warthog, and blesbuck, experience a calving season that usually occurs from November to December. This synchronised timing enhances the survival rates of the young, as a larger number of calves born simultaneously increases their chances of reaching maturity. Additionally, these animals collaborate within their herds to protect and nurture the calves, further boosting their survival prospects.

Experiencing the sight of baby animals can elevate an already enchanting game drive to a whole new level. Witnessing these tiny creatures take their first steps just hours after birth, and observing the lengths their mothers will go to ensure their safety is truly heartwarming.
