14 Jun Beautiful Grey Duiker: Making Her Appearance At Dusk
Common Duiker also known as the Grey or Bush duiker, (duiker being the Afrikaans translation for diver), aptly named for their amazing ability to run at a very high speed in a zig zag motion and diving into the bushes to hide from predators.
This tiny, shy antelope is mostly active during the late afternoon into the night and in the early hours of the morning, when they come out to forage for food.
The duiker is one of the few antelope species that supplement their diet of leaves, seeds, tubers, fruits and flowers with meat, they do occasionally dine on insects, small mammals, small birds, lizards, frogs and even carrion. Duikers receive all the water they need from the plants and fruits that they eat and are therefore able to live independently from water.
Male duikers have small horns whereas the females do not have any horns.
